Smoking and Tobacco Use

Smoking and Tobacco Use

In class we watched the movie "Thank you for smoking". In that movie a man tries to convince people that smoking isn't bad, but in reality the effect of smoking takes lives everyday. In fact smoking causes more deaths than the following combined; illegal drug use, alcohol use, car crashes, fire-arm related incidents, and HIV. Smoking can increase health risks,  cause cancer and diseases.

Increased Health Risks

  • Estimates show smoking increases the risk:
    • For coronary heart disease by 2 to 4 times
    • For stroke by 2 to 4 times
    • Of men developing lung cancer by 25 times
    • Of women developing lung cancer by 25.7 times
  • Smoking causes diminished overall health, increased absenteeism from work, and increased health care utilization and cost.

Smoking can cause cancer almost anywhere in your body:

  • Bladder
  • Blood (acute myeloid leukemia).
  • Cervix
  • Colon and rectum (colorectal)
  • Esophagus
  • Kidney and ureter
  • Larynx
  • Liver
  • Oropharynx (includes parts of the throat, tongue, soft palate, and the tonsils)
  • Pancreas
  • Stomach
  • Trachea, bronchus, and lung
Once you start it's hard to stop

Smoking is a hard habit to change because it contains a very addictive chemical nicotine. One you start smoking the mind and body get used to it. The need to have it becomes normal. People start smoking for a lot of different reasons. Maybe a family member or classmate smokes and thinks its cool. Most people never expect to get addicted but if you are here are some tips to help.

  • Focus on your motivators
  • Build confidence
  • It's never too late to quit
  • Learn from past experiences
  • You don't have to quit alone.
  • Medications are safe and effective and will help you quit and stay quit when used properly
  • Every smoker can quit

  1. I do agree that smoking is one of the most dangerous things someone can do. smoking has so many risk but these companies like the ones in the movie depict it as a safe thing to do which entices people to smoke more. I also agree that smoking is very hard to stop once you start.

  3. Im glad that you looked into the actual facts of smoking. I feel that many people always say "smoking is bad" but never get to the research aspect of why it is so harmful for our bodies. I didn't know the fact about men/women increasing their chances of cancer by 25% that's so crazy to me! Smoking/vaping has become such a social thing in our time and I believe it is important to know the facts before you do anything that could potentially hurt your body.

  4. I definitely agree that smoking is a very dangerous thing to do and you are putting yourself in high risks for getting cancer. I feel like once people start they do not want to stop but there are ways for you to if you would want to. Also if they would just put their mind to it. It's good to show facts of smoking so it is little more in depth. I feel like the more we put it out there then the more people might not want to end up damaging their body and regretting it.

  5. Smoking is dangerous and in my opinion its pointless to smoke cigarettes. I believe it only hurts your health. It affects your lungs, throat, teeth, and tongue. I think there are alternative methods than smoking to deal with stress, the muscle memory of smoking cigarettes, and overall addiction to cigarettes. I also believe people spend a large chunk of money on cigarettes daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. This is a problem for people with addictions but not only does it hurt your health but also your money.

  6. I agree with you that smoking is very dangerous. Yet i think that people should be able to do what they want even if it is selfish. I think spreading information and educating people on smoking and the dangers will go way further than just telling people not to smoke because its dangerous.
