How do we feel about rhetoric?

In class on Tuesday we had a very in-depth classroom discussion of rhetoric. We've learned what rhetoric was, what it was used for and who taught it. We listed terms that we noticed and thought had a strong connection to rhetoric. We also compared different rhetors opinion of rhetoric.

Similarities
Speech
"The Study of"
"The Art of"

Differences
Negative
Misleading
A Tool

Some of those terms are

  • Persuasion
  • Speaking
  • Art
  • Study
  • Language
  • Rhetoric
  • Communication
  • Practice
  • Manipulation
  • Political
Throughout our firsts weeks of class, we've continued to learn about rhetoric. We've also watch a movie called Thank You for Smoking. This movie does a great job showing a lobbyist named Nick Naylor use rhetoric to persuade people to smoke. It's all about what you say and how you say it. After the movie we leave wondering about rhetors. Now we have more questions than before and we become inquisitive. We want to know what rhetors responsibility to society is, are rhetors good people, and do they lie for a living.

All these questions will have a variation of answers just depending on who you ask them to. Some people will tell you that rhetors have no responsibility to society, while others will tell you their responsibility to society is greater. The same goes with are they good people. People struggle with answering this because people are unsure of what rhetors actually do, and whether they lie to "pay the mortgage".

As a class and society we've learned more and more about rhetoric. We understand where it comes from, we understand what it's used for, and we understand that their is a-lot of controversy involved in rhetoric. How do you feel about rhetoric? Is it good or bad. Can it be useful or is it used to manipulate? Is it a skill we need in todays age?
